Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is a fine-grained carbonaceous adsorption material widely used in various fields due to its high specific surface area and excellent adsorption properties. Its particles, typically less than 0.18 mm in diameter, possess a well-developed pore structure, effectively adsorbing organic matter, odors, pigments, and some heavy metal ions. It is a key material in water treatment, air purification, and industrial purification processes.

In water treatment, powdered activated carbon is primarily used to remove organic pollutants, chlorinated hydrocarbons, pesticide residues, and unpleasant colors and odors from water. Municipal water utilities often add it to raw water or during treatment to improve water quality. PAC can rapidly adsorb harmful substances, ensuring drinking water safety, especially in response to sudden pollution incidents. Furthermore, in industrial wastewater treatment, PAC can effectively degrade phenols, dyes, and petroleum-based pollutants, reducing wastewater toxicity and ensuring compliance with discharge standards.

In the area of air purification, powdered activated carbon is widely used for indoor formaldehyde removal, benzene compounds, and smoke adsorption. It is also used for industrial waste gas treatment, such as the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in chemical, petrochemical, and waste incineration processes. Its high adsorption capacity makes it an effective means of controlling air pollution.

Powdered activated carbon also has important applications in the food processing, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. For example, it is used for decolorization and purification in the sugar industry, as a drug carrier or adsorbent in the pharmaceutical field, and as a catalyst support or impurity removal in chemical production.

Although powdered activated carbon is difficult to recycle after use and may cause secondary pollution, its high adsorption performance makes it an indispensable material in many industries. With increasing environmental protection requirements, PAC modification technologies and recycling methods are constantly developing to further enhance its application value and environmental friendliness. In the future, powdered activated carbon will play a key role in a wider range of fields, contributing to pollution control and sustainable resource utilization.
